The Loudest Part of You follows a character who is being kept awake by a voice in his head. The voice is cynical, manipulative and openly destructive. It wishes to keep the character confined to the dejection that plagues the house. The voice is also the narrator and the main relayer of information about the environment.

Years before the setting of the game, the character was involved in manslaughter. The victim was his newly wedded wife, who remains nameless in the game. His actions, as well as their emotional consequences, become evident as the story progresses.

Ultimately, the player is attempting to lead the character to a moment of peace. In the way of this is a padlock that must be cracked, textual puzzles that must be solved, and a harrowing voice that must be silenced. Items can be picked up and used in other rooms, and the type of ending is dependent on the significant object that the player chooses to prioritise.
